‘Women at Work’: Celebrating International Women's Day in Hereford

Hereford will host an inspiring event on 8th March 2025, 11am – 3pm, in celebration of International Women's Day

Organised by Herefordshire Women’s Equality Group (HWEG) and West Mercia Women’s Aid (WMWA), the ‘Women at Work’ event will take place at NMITE University’s Skylon Campus, Rotherwas, offering an afternoon of celebration, learning, and community connection.

This year’s theme, ‘Women at Work’, highlights the many forms of work women do —from leadership and entrepreneurship to advocacy and community-building.

The day will feature a fantastic line-up of speakers with Ellie Chowns, the first female MP for North Herefordshire, opening the event. Abigail Appleton MBE, Principal of Hereford College of Arts, will discuss how transferable skills equip arts students for diverse careers. Nargis Sherzad, a former Kabul-based journalist reporting on women's rights, now resettled in Hereford and running an Afghan patisserie business, will be in conversation with journalist Jane WheatleyEmma Hurds, outgoing Junior Mayor of Hereford, will reflect on the impact of her role on young people. Helen Bowden, incoming High Sheriff of Herefordshire, will share insights on stepping into a demanding ceremonial role while balancing a busy career.

You will have the opportunity to explore a range of stalls providing information on local services and initiatives. The WMWA Choir will perform songs of inspiration and empowerment. A raffle with incredible contributions from local artists and refreshments available for donation will help raise funds for the Linda Norgrove Foundation, who provide grants to fund education, health and childcare for women and children affected by conflict in Afghanistan.

This free event invites all members of the community to join in championing women’s achievements—from ground breaking milestones to everyday contributions. The ‘Women at Work’ theme, chosen by HWEG and WMWA, recognises the many ways women shape our world, both seen and unseen.

Join us as we honour, support, and empower women in Herefordshire and beyond.

There are a number of events taking place in Hereford on Saturday, Hereford Friends will be celebrating International Women’s Day at Hereford Friends Meeting House, 3pm – 6pm with Afternoon Tea, a performance of “The Empty Plinth” a play that tells the story of five historical women from Herefordshire and live music from “From the cradle to the grave.” This is also a free event and all are welcome.
