What is the UCAS Embargo? Everything students need to know

If you're expecting A Level results or thinking about applying to university through Clearing, you might have heard the term UCAS embargo – but what does it actually mean?

In simple terms, the UCAS embargo is a short period where universities, colleges and UCAS must not share your results or application status with you before official results day – August 14 2025.

It can feel a bit confusing, especially if you’re anxiously waiting to find out what happens next.

That’s why we’ve broken it down into five quick points, so you know exactly what to expect, what you can do, and how NMITE can help.

1. So… What is the UCAS embargo?

The UCAS embargo is a confidentiality period that ensures all students receive their results at the same time. It’s in place to protect your privacy and make sure no one gets an unfair advantage.

During the embargo, universities can see your results (so they can start making decisions about your application) – but they’re not allowed to tell you anything about those decisions until the embargo ends.

2. When is the UCAS embargo in 2025?

🕗 Starts: Friday 8 August at 8:00am
🕗 Ends: Thursday 14 August at 8:00am

During this window, universities – including NMITE – won’t be able to speak to you about your application if you're holding a conditional offer and awaiting results.

As soon as the embargo lifts, we can talk to you about your next steps.

3. What does this mean for me?

If you're waiting on results for a conditional offer, the embargo means:

  • You won’t hear anything official from your university until after 8am on Thursday 14 August.
  • Even if your place is confirmed behind the scenes, universities must wait until the embargo ends to tell you.
  • It’s totally normal to feel anxious during this time – but the process is designed to be fair for everyone.

If you’ve already received your results (e.g. BTECs or international qualifications), the embargo may not apply in the same way – but your university still won’t be able to confirm anything if you’re holding a conditional offer.

4. What can I do during the embargo?

  • Prepare for all outcomes: Think about what you’ll do if you meet, miss, or exceed your offer.
  • Explore other options: If you’re reconsidering your choices or want a more hands-on degree, check out universities like NMITE that offer direct applications (no UCAS needed).
  • Get ready for Results Day: Bookmark Clearing numbers, review course options, and make a shortlist.

📌 Top Tip: NMITE can give you a decision in 30 minutes or less through direct Clearing on our website – no UCAS login needed.

5. What happens after the embargo?

Once the UCAS embargo ends on Thursday 14 August at 8am, the floodgates open!

  • You’ll be able to check UCAS Hub to see your status.
  • If you didn’t get the results you hoped for – or want to change your mind – you can enter Clearing.
  • At NMITE, our friendly team will be available from 8am to talk to you, help you apply, or answer any questions you have about Clearing.
