Kick off your degree with a Foundation Year at NMITE

Foundation Years at NMITE are available to be taken integrated into all of our engineering and technology degree courses. If you didn’t get the A-Level results you were hoping for, are thinking of a change in career, or if you did not follow traditional routes into Higher Education, then starting your studies with a Foundation Year may be the right choice for you. You'll develop the key transferable skills and subject-specific knowledge needed to continue into one of NMITE's technical degree courses - and better still, you'll still have the potential to complete your studies faster than many other traditional institutions, and be work-ready too!

Foundation Year Entry Requirements - what do you need?

Our entry requirements are listed below, but if you're unsure of your eligibility it's worth contacting us for a conversation. We might be able to help you identify a route to entry, and get you started on your career journey!

  • Either: Two A-Levels in any subject and at any pass grade (or equivalent qualifications such as a BTEC National Diploma or Level 3 Apprenticeship)
  • Or: Demonstrable experience, interest in and flair for your chosen subject.
  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 or above.
  • Students must be at least 18 years of age by the time the course begins.
  • Students whose first language is not English should evidence IELTS grade 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each component or an alternative acceptable qualification.

Our Foundation year, taken over the course of one full academic year, will see you develop the key transferable skills and subject-specific knowledge needed to continue into one of NMITE's technical undergraduate degrees, without the need to reapply.

Foundation Year Module Overview

Foundation Years at NMITE cover the following module topics, with each module being specifically designed to teach you the required knowledge and skills you need to progress onto one of NMITE's MEng, BEng or BSc Sustainable Built Environment Degrees. 

Foundation Year

  • Creativity and Fundamental Engineering Skills - Explore the range of technical and non-technical skills required within engineering and technology including laws of physics, principles mathematics, and communication, collaboration and digital skills. 
  • Engineered Structures and Mechanisms - Investigate different types of engineered objects and how they work. You'll carry out tests, and work with models of real structures and moving artefacts such as buildings and transport.
  • Engineering and Technology as Problem-solving - Develop your understanding of how engineering and technology fit within a wider societal context, through the solving of a systems-based problem that would pose real-world repercussions. Along the way, you'll further develop your skills in maths, modelling, producing graphs and using digital tools.
  • Engineering and Technology Project - Apply your learning across the year to an individual project, finding out about various engineering and technology disciplines and the roles they play in different industries and business sectors, and considering your own future career options

Module Delivery

The Foundation Year is taught one module (30 credits) at a time over an 8 week period. An academic year comprises 4 modules x 8 weeks (32 taught weeks).

We offer a various modes of study to progress onto, including accelerated options for our degrees - so you could even end up graduating at the the same time as your peers at other university's even if they haven't taken a Foundation Year.

BEng with Foundation Year (4 years study)

  • Learn to identify problems that need solving, and to find creative solutions to society’s challenges.

  • Employer and community driven module learning - each has been designed with insight either from industry, or our community. 

Fees: £9,000 PA
International Fees: £18,000 PA

BEng (Fast-track) with Foundation Year (3 years 2 months study)

  • Save on cost, without compromising on the quality of your education
  • Develop hands-on, practical skills throughout your study with experienced academics, and employers from industry to guide you along the way
  • You'll gain the ability to integrate, synthesize, apply and gain knowledge, with an awareness of social and ethical responsibilities.
  • Learn to identify problems that need solving, and to find creative solutions to society’s challenges.
  • Receive support, whenever needed - 1:1 support through your allocated Personal Tutor, use of the Academic Skills and Knowhow Centre, and Student Services. 
  •  Employer and community driven modular learning - we call our modules 'Sprints' and each has been designed with insight either from industry, or our community.

MEng with Foundation Year (5 years study)

  • You'll gain the ability to integrate, synthesize, apply and gain knowledge, with an awareness of social and ethical responsibilities.
  • Learn to identify problems that need solving, and to find creative solutions to society’s challenges.
  • Receive support, whenever needed - 1:1 support through your allocated Personal Tutor, use of the Academic Skills and Knowhow Centre, and Student Services. 
  • Employer and community driven module learning -  each has been designed with insight either from industry, or our community. 

Fees: £9,000 Foundation Year followed by £9,000 PA

  • Following your Foundation year, you'll complete your MEng Degree in only 3 years - meaning you'll still have the potential to complete your studies faster than many other traditional institutions, and be work-ready too!

BSc (Hons) Sustainable Built Environment with Foundation Year (4 years study)

  • Within your Foundation Year, develop the key transferable skills and subject-specific knowledge needed to continue into NMITE's BSc (Hons) Sustainable Built Environment Degree, without the need to reapply
  • Challenge led learning - hands on with real world problems 
  • Practically learn to navigate and add value to contemporary building practice
  • Gain extensive knowledge through consistent industrial and community engagement
