BBC Politics Midlands shines a spotlight on NMITE's role in developing future engineering talent

NMITE welcomed the BBC Politics Midlands team to campus to explore how the University is preparing the next generation of engineers with the skills needed to support the UK's future defence, national security and advanced technology sectors.

The feature examined how NMITE's hands-on, industry-connected approach to learning is equipping students to tackle emerging engineering challenges while contributing to the country's long-term economic resilience and security.

During the programme, students shared their priorities for the UK's next Prime Minister, calling for clear leadership, greater transparency and a long-term commitment to national security. They also highlighted the importance of investing in defence and ensuring the UK has the skilled workforce needed to meet future challenges.

Commenting during the interview, James Newby, CEO of NMITE, emphasised that national security depends not only on investment in equipment, but also on investment in people.

"I would hope that whoever our political leaders are, they have a relentless focus on building skills. Often the defence debate is based on the procurement of equipment, which is important, but all of that equipment requires people with the skills to design it, build it and operate it."

James added that investing in skills is fundamental to strengthening the UK's defence capability, supporting national security and driving economic growth through innovation and advanced manufacturing.

The visit came ahead of the publication of the Government's defence plan and the July summit, placing a spotlight on the critical role universities and industry play in developing the engineers, innovators and technical specialists the UK will need in the years ahead.

NMITE's distinctive approach to engineering education combines accelerated degree programmes with project-based learning and close collaboration with employers, ensuring graduates are equipped with the technical expertise, professional skills and practical experience to make an immediate impact in industry.
